Custom Deck with Pool Space and Landscaping

Project Brief

Updating and replacing a deck from the existing structure

Building a deck off of an existing structure is simpler than you may think. Not every custom deck needs to be a complete pull and replace. While we do require the deck to pass our safety inspection and assessment per NADRA best practices, this doesn’t mean that you need to tear out your deck and build a totally new one. We are certified to bring your deck up to deck codes – as long as the structure is stable enough as is.

In this case, this deck and railing were originally constructed from cedar. Cedar wood is a great deck material because it handles the elements exceptionally well. That said, it requires continual cleaning, maintenance, and upkeep (read more about deck maintenance here). This can add up – both in cost and in time. While the homeowners liked the existing style, they were ready to make it lower maintenance deck so they could spend more time enjoying and less time and money in deck upkeep.

Designing a low maintenance, family friendly deck

Rather than starting completely from scratch, we built the design off of what we new the client already liked from their existing deck. The homeowners wanted to put less work and more enjoyment into their updated deck. Our expert team planned material options based on this. Azek decking with a PVC trim doesn’t rot and is impervious to water and insects. It’s the perfect option for families looking to put less effort into deck maintenance – especially in the Hudson Valley where we can experience extremes of all seasons. The Azek Rail in particular is extremely low maintenance, exceeds structural requirements, and takes paint exceptionally well. (Not sure what deck material is right for you? Check out our comparison here!)

Our expert team made a few design upgrades to customize the deck design to truly fit the homeowners dreams. All it takes is a few finishing touches to truly make a deck space yours. We designed the deck with a few key objectives in mind:

  • low maintenance and easy to clean
  • overall design matching the house exterior facade
  • space to host guests and loved ones
  • custom landscaping to add shade and color
  • bomb pool parties

Added safety precautions and low maintenance deck upgrades

During the deck rebuild process, we noticed that the stairs needed a good update. They weren’t originally in the scope, but the homeowners and our team agreed the safety was a top priority. We rebuilt the stairs and designed a proper landing that matched the rest of outdoor living space facade as if it had always been there.
